Special Facts
Pound for pound, Scup are sure to get rod tip bending and the heart racing!  These fish bite aggressively so don't be caught sleeping on the rod.  They do exhibit different bite patterns based on the size of the school and size of the fish.  Larger fish pull more and bounce less.  They will generally strike again if you happen to "miss" and don't spook easily.  They mostly favor the bottom hook on a hi /lo rig.  If you stop getting bites, reel it in, bait the bottom hook and drop it back down.  When in large numbers, they sometimes hit the hook before your sinker hits the bottom.  Other times, you can get your line on the bottom and give the rod a lift and you'll find "you've got company" without ever feeling a bite.  The key to catching these fish is to keep the slack out of your line and be ready to set the hook on the right bounce on the 1, 2 combination – you will know!

Habitat Bottom (wrecks, reefs, rock piles)
Method / Special Facts

This is a crafty fish! They are "tackle busters" and grow to be large because they are smart.  You will miss and spook the fish if you swing on the first nibble.  Remember, when you are using crabs or hard crustaceans as bait, Blackfish ingest it and chew with their "crushers" in the back of their throat.  Resist the temptation to set the hook prematurely, keep your line tight and wait for the "tug" - you will know.

If you're fishing with a J hook, now is the time to set it.  If you're fishing with a circle hook, keep tight to the line with your rod tip up (slightly below horizontal), keep steady presssure and retrieve, not too fast, but not too slow either, because if you get pulled into the wreck, you'll likely loose the battle.  Make sure a net or gaff is handy!

Sea Bass

Species Sea Bass (Centropristis Striata)
Season July 15 - December 31
Best time to catch July - September
Preferred Bait Clams and squid
Size / Creel Limit 14"/8 (Jul 15 - Oct 31), 14"/10 (Nov-Dec)

Equipment 6'6" medium action rod, 4/0 reel or equivalent spooled with 30lb test mono or braid
Rig 2/0 J or circle hook hi/lo rig of 30 lb. test connected to main line via 50 lb. swivel
Habitat Bottom (wrecks, reefs, rock piles)
Method /
Special Facts
This crafty member of the grouper family is sure to get the get your arms and your taste buds equally excited! Pound for pound, Sea Bass put up a nice fight. Larger fish will give you quite a pull and easily cause you to overestimate their size. Since they do have larger mouths (typical of bass), larger sized baits to entice larger fish work successfully. They can be spooked so wait a good bite to set the hook. Resist the temptation to set the hook prematurely, keep your line tight - especially if you are fishing with circle hooks and crank em' up steady.
